Online Exclusive Giveaway for Halliwell Students!

Whether you're visiting the blog for the first time after reading the Q3 newsletter, or you've already been on for months making your parents watch Buster Keaton, we are happy to have you here. So happy, in fact, that we want you to choose a free book to keep for your own! Thanks to several generous donors, we have a selection of novels for you to choose from.

To qualify for a free book, leave a note in Ms. Moore's mailbox during the week of April 23. Include your name and classroom as well as the word "bibliophile" (which means a lover of books).

Disclaimer: Limited to the first 40 students. And also the picture does not necessarily represent the books in the giveaway box. But we have some really good ones!

Spring Book Fair Results

The library now has $1,200 to spend on books, magazines, supplies, and other materials thanks to all the families who made purchases at the bookfair. We can't wait to buy RICBA 2013 nominees, more graphic novels, nonfiction about topics on which the kids haven't been able to find information, and some fantastic new stories like The One and Only Ivan.

Nothing sold as well as Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever did back in the fall ... we sold 86 copies of that! But there were definite favorites this time around, including Big Nate, Bad Kitty, Flutter, The Loser List, Glory Be, Eye Bogglers, and, of course, The Guinness Book of World Records.

Thank You, Volunteers!!!

Our spring book fair was a success, and we couldn’t have done it without our volunteers. A million thanks to:

A Note About "The Hunger Games"

As you can see from our Q3 list of top searches, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is on Halliwell students' minds. I read the book years ago and saw the movie last week, and I can vouch that it's great storytelling that makes you think about freedom, society, and personal responsibility. On the other hand, it's also very violent and geared towards readers older than grades 3-5.

We do not own a copy of The Hunger Games at Halliwell, and we do not plan to purchase one. However, if students have discussed the book with their family, and bring a note to the school library stating that they can handle the themes and graphic scenes, then I can request it from the middle/high school for them.

In the meantime, we DO have Collins' Gregor the Overlander series available for checkout! And "read-alike" lists for younger readers include the Among the Hidden series by Margaret Peterson Haddix, City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

Top Catalog Searches - Q3 2012

1. Amulet
2. the hunger games
3. big nate
4. bone
5. Whats new Cupcake
6. dogs
7. DrSuess
8. justin bieber
9. Mocking bird
10. beatles

We had quite a run on Amulet this quarter; we now have two copies of each book in the series, and they are all almost always on hold. Big Nate has remained on the Top 10, and Bone has jumped back up. Clearly, Halliwell kids love graphic novels! We've added the first book in several other series (Squish, Frankie Pickle, etc.) to the collection and are looking for kids' feedback on which ones to continue buying.
