A Note About "The Hunger Games"

As you can see from our Q3 list of top searches, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is on Halliwell students' minds. I read the book years ago and saw the movie last week, and I can vouch that it's great storytelling that makes you think about freedom, society, and personal responsibility. On the other hand, it's also very violent and geared towards readers older than grades 3-5.

We do not own a copy of The Hunger Games at Halliwell, and we do not plan to purchase one. However, if students have discussed the book with their family, and bring a note to the school library stating that they can handle the themes and graphic scenes, then I can request it from the middle/high school for them.

In the meantime, we DO have Collins' Gregor the Overlander series available for checkout! And "read-alike" lists for younger readers include the Among the Hidden series by Margaret Peterson Haddix, City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

We had quite a run on Amulet this quarter; we now have two copies of each book in the series, and they are all almost always on hold. Big Nate has remained on the Top 10, and Bone has jumped back up. Clearly, Halliwell kids love graphic novels! We've added the first book in several other series (Squish, Frankie Pickle, etc.) to the collection and are looking for kids' feedback on which ones to continue buying.

Grade 5 Research

Writing the script

5O and 5LM students have been gathering information on a wide range of self-selected topics, including:

- How humans are threats to sharks
- The origins of the solar system
- Are pit bulls really mean and vicious?
- Hieroglyphics
- How Muppets are made
- Famous ghost sightings

Adding design touches

Working in groups, they are putting together paper slide shows; since we don't have enough computers in the library for everyone to access presentation software, we're going a little low-tech instead. However, we'll be recording the slide shows and posting them online, which is high-tech!

Did you know that the library's entire collection and materials budget comes from money raised during the bookfair? That's why we're having another one this spring!
